Dome Cologne
Nothing says “Cologne” like the city’s famous cathedral – it’s simply a landmark in the truest sense of the word. The familiar shape of the cathedral, with its double towers, is probably the most recognisable building in Germany. Cologne’s cathedral is a symbol – a symbol of the city, and one that anyone can now own and custom-design in miniature with a Dome Cologne, thanks to the efforts of project initiator Karsten Ludwig. The smart art team, headed by current project lead Martin Dippel, is the design and implementation partner of the dome-cologne project. The project can be taken on by anyone who enjoys art and feels a connection to the city of Cologne. Some recent participants include companies, charitable foundations, associations and even private individuals. Should a customer decide to have a “mini cathedral” custom-designed for themselves or their company, the first step is to arrange a preliminary meeting with smart art to discuss potential ideas. The chosen design is then completed by the client at the smart art workshop. A far cry from purely corporate design, here three-dimensional blank sculptures – measuring an impressive 2.80 metres in height – are transformed into genuine works of art. A foundation is applied to each of the four sides of the “mini cathedral” before painting; this ensures that the whole sculpture is visually appealing from all four sides, especially the characteristic towers. The finished piece, which is one of a kind, is then taken “on tour” with other Dom Cologne sculptures. For instance, the travelling exhibit recently spent several weeks at Cologne Bonn Airport, where it attracted plenty of fans.
