“Carbon” plane
“Carbon” plane
Because the smart art team loves a good challenge, the partial painting of a private airplane in an elegant “carbon” look was the perfect job. Carbon is a very lightweight yet sturdy synthetic material with a characteristic surface texture. The job was to precisely duplicate this web-like structure using paint. French designer Didier Wolff (www.happydesign.net)
was responsible for drafting the overall paint job. The painting of the fuselage was carried out by external contractors. The job of partially painting the yaw rudders at the tail of the aircraft was entrusted to the experienced hands of the smart art team. The site in this case was an aviation paint shop near Munich. Over the course of about a week, the team first measured and then began adhering the design to the plane. The unmistakable “carbon” look was achieved through carefully lining up countless individual elements, painting each of them in several layers and adding shadows. Because the exterior hull of an airplane is exposed to certain thermal and mechanical influences, the material used here was specially certified aircraft lacquer. The challenge for this project, in other words, wasn’t the size of the design or the complexity of the task, but rather the scope and precision needed for each individual step of the process to transform a monochrome surface into a deceptively life-like carbon surface.
